New ‘Zine Shows How Zoning Changes Neighborhoods

Metropolitan Planning Council
put together the In the Zone 'zine to explain zoning and how it can help or hurt neighborhoods. With graphics by Bridgeport artist Lucie Van der Elst, the 'zine explains all the people and processes that go into making decisions about what types of developments go where in Chicago.

For example, the ‘zine uses MAT Asphalt as an example of a zoning failure, comparing it to a successful industrial development in another neighborhood, where neighbors were included in decision making.

Other prominent zoning issues in McKinley Park include the recent rezoning of 35th St to allow small businesses to open, as well as many additional locations with outdated industrial zoning that could bring more polluters and prevent conversion of unused space to new uses like housing.
